Zip Code Income Targeting: Your Ads Only Where People Can Afford You

Most agencies draw a circle around your shop and show your ads to everyone inside it. We research household income for every zip code in your service area first, and keep only the ones where people can pay for your work. Fewer leads that waste your week, more leads who already live in the kind of house you work on.

Why a 60-mile circle wastes your ad budget

Picture the leads from a typical campaign. A renter who wants a price for a kitchen he does not own. A family two counties away that will never pay your travel. Someone who loves the photo, asks for a quote and goes silent when the number arrives. You still drive out, measure and write the estimate, and the week is gone.

Most of that comes from one setting. The agency puts a 60-mile radius around your address and lets Facebook show the ad to anyone inside it. That circle includes neighborhoods that could never afford a remodel, and even woods, lakes and areas where nobody lives. You pay to reach all of it.

Zip code income targeting fixes the problem at the root. Instead of a circle, your ads run on a list of zip codes chosen one by one, based on who actually lives there. The ad is the same, the budget can be the same, and the people seeing it change completely.

How zip code income targeting works, in plain English

The U.S. Census publishes income data for every zip code. That includes the median household income, which is the income of the household right in the middle: half earn more, half earn less. It is a good way to know what a neighborhood can afford without guessing from a map.

Before your first ad goes live, we pull that data for every zip code in your service area. Then we keep only the ones where households earn enough to hire you. For remodeling, that is typically $100k a year and up. For other trades, we set the line with you based on the ticket of your service.

Income alone is not the whole picture, so we also look at home values and how many homes are owner-occupied. A zip with good income but mostly apartments is not a great place to sell countertops. A zip with owners in single-family homes usually is.

Our zip code income targeting process, step by step

This research happens before a single dollar is spent. It is one of the first things we do for every new client. The result is a clear list you can read and question. Here is the order we follow.

01Map where you really workWe start from the towns you drive to and the ticket of the service you want to sell.
02Pull every zip code in reachEvery zip code within your service area goes on the list, before any filter.
03Add Census income, home value and ownershipEach zip gets its median household income, typical home value and share of owner-occupied homes.
04Rank and cutWe separate the core zip codes, the secondary ones and the ones that stay out, and explain why.
05Build the audience in your accountThe final list becomes the location targeting of your campaigns, inside your own ad account.
06Check the list against closed jobsOver time we compare zip codes by estimates and contracts, and adjust the list with real results.

What you get with zip code income targeting

The research is not a secret kept inside the agency. It is delivered to you. You can look at your own market with fresh eyes, and use it for mailers, door hangers or deciding where to open your next crew. It is your data about your area.

Home value and homeowner filtersSo renters and small apartments do not eat the budget of a remodel campaign.

Targeting applied to your campaignsThe list goes straight into the location settings of your ads.
Re-check when you growNew towns or a new service line mean new research before adding them.

Radius targeting vs zip code income targeting

Both approaches can use the same ad and the same budget. The difference is who sees it. This is the part of our method we defend the hardest. Here is why.

Radius targeting
Escalar+ zip code income targeting
✕A 60-mile circle drawn around your address
A list of zip codes chosen one by one
✕Everyone inside it sees the ad
Only zips where household income fits your ticket
✕Pays to reach woods, lakes and empty land
Budget stays where homeowners actually live
✕Set once and never looked at again
Re-checked against closed jobs and when you expand
✕The logic stays inside the agency

What zip code income targeting looked like for real clients

For MJD Coastal Services, a painting company in Sarasota, we built a Fast Quote campaign on native Facebook forms across 77 zip codes. Each one was chosen with Census data, instead of a circle around the office. The form asks for what the painter needs to prepare the quote, and the targeting keeps it in front of homeowners who can pay for it.

For Lopes Express Shipping, a car carrier running between Florida and New England, the same method was applied to Massachusetts. Out of 962 zip codes in the state, the research kept 141 with median income above $100k. That list is the base for targeting the snowbird campaign, instead of the whole state.

For MCP Flooring in Summerfield, near The Villages and Ocala, form campaigns on Meta run with zip code income targeting. That region concentrates retirees who own their homes and plan a flooring job carefully, so the filter keeps the offer in front of households ready to replace old tile or carpet. It describes the work we did there, not a promise for your account, and we say it that way on purpose.

Which trades benefit most from zip code income targeting

The higher the ticket, the more income matters. Remodeling, kitchens and baths, countertops, cabinets and flooring are the clearest cases. A homeowner in Lakewood Ranch and a renter a few miles away can see the same ad, but only one of them can sign a remodel contract this year.

It also helps in services where the lead volume is high and the fit varies a lot, like painting, landscaping and pressure washing. In those trades the line may be lower than in remodeling, and home value and ownership often matter as much as income. We set the criteria with you, trade by trade.

The method travels well between markets. We use it around Sarasota, Bradenton and Boynton Beach in Florida, and around Holliston, Framingham and Worcester in Massachusetts. Each area has its own map of money, and the research is how we read it before spending your budget.

Which plan includes it, and when it happens

Zip code research is part of how we run paid ads, so it comes with ads management on every plan, starting at $497 a month. It is not a paid add-on. We do it because running ads without it would waste the budget you are trusting us with. Your ad spend is separate and stays on your card.

It happens in the first days after you sign, before the campaign goes live. We aim to have everything running in 7 days, and the part that usually waits is the A2P registration for texting, not the research. Once the list is ready, it goes straight into your campaign settings.

After launch, the list is not frozen. The platform needs about 90 days of data to fully optimize, and during that time we watch which zip codes bring estimates and contracts. When you add a new town or a new service, we run the research again before expanding.

Better to reach fewer people who can say yes

A big audience looks impressive in a report. A smaller audience of homeowners who can afford you fills your calendar with estimates worth driving to. We will always choose the second one.

We do not promise a number of leads or contracts. We promise that every campaign is built with excellence, that the research is yours and that there is no lock-in contract. If it is not working for you, you leave.

Can Facebook really target by income?

Not directly in the U.S., and that is exactly why the research matters. We do the income work outside the platform with Census data, per zip code. Then we give Facebook only the zip codes that passed the filter. The platform targets the location, and the research decides which locations are worth it.

What income level do you use for my trade?

For remodeling, the line is typically $100k a year and up. For other trades, we set it with you based on the ticket of your service, and we also weigh home value and homeownership. A pressure washing job and a full kitchen remodel do not need the same filter.

Won't I lose good customers in the zip codes you cut?

Some good customers live everywhere, that is true. But paid ads have a limited budget, and spending it where the fit is weaker means fewer dollars where it is strongest. Referrals, your Google profile and your website still reach everyone. The ads focus where the odds are best.

Do ad platform rules limit this kind of targeting?

Sometimes. Some ad categories on Meta restrict how narrow location and audience targeting can be. When a campaign falls under those rules, we follow them and adapt how we use the research, for example in the offer, the creative and where we put the budget. We tell you when that happens and what changed.

Do I get to see the zip code list?

Yes. The research is delivered to you, with the data behind each zip code. You can question any choice, and you can use it outside of ads too. It stays with you even if you stop working with us.

Does this work for Google Ads too?

Yes. Google lets you target locations by zip code, so the same list can shape where your search ads show. The logic is identical: spend where the people who can hire you actually live. We only run Google when your budget makes sense for it.

How often do you update the research?

We revisit it when you expand your service area, add a new service line or when results by zip code tell us something. Income data does not change week to week, but your business does. The list follows your business.

Does this mean I will get more contracts?

We do not promise that, and nobody honest can. What income targeting does is cut the budget spent on people who could never hire you. Whether a qualified lead signs still depends on your offer, your price and how fast you respond. Our part is to put your ads in front of the right homes, with excellence.
